Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon addressed a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta, asserting Californians should have access to contemporary handguns for personal protection rather than being restricted to outdated models.

“They should not be forced to settle for decade-old models of handguns to ensure that they remain safe inside or outside the home,” wrote Dhillon.

NRA and DOJ Press for Reversal of California’s Gun Law

The National Rifle Association has joined the legal fight against California’s ‘Glock-style’ firearm ban, arguing it violates constitutional rights. Assembly Bill 1127, known as the ‘Glock ban,’ is scheduled to become effective on July 1. Signed into law by Newsom last fall, this regulation prevents licensed dealers from selling or transferring pistols designated as ‘machinegun-convertible.’

Dhillon has approved filing a complaint in federal court to challenge California’s statute, though she proposed a delay should the state agree to pre-suit discussions. She highlighted the necessity for California to halt enforcement, acknowledge the law’s constitutional issues, and accept a court-enforced decree preventing future violations of Second Amendment rights.

Dhillon has set a deadline for pre-suit negotiations, requiring state officials to respond by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
