Investigation Into Vandalism at the Reflecting Pool
The U.S. Park Police is asking for the public’s help to identify a person shown in footage related to damage at the Reflecting Pool and alleged destruction of government property in Washington, D.C. The incident reportedly occurred on Friday at 3:36 p.m. on the grounds of the Lincoln Memorial.
In a video released by the police, a person can be seen kneeling beside the Reflecting Pool, reaching an arm into the water. This individual appears to have dark hair, wearing a gray shirt with black shorts, and carrying a light-colored handbag.
Police said the investigation follows President Donald Trump’s attempt to resurface the Reflecting Pool, which led to peeling paint and algae altering the intended “American Flag Blue” appearance to a swampy green. Multiple people were reportedly arrested and cited for allegedly damaging the Reflecting Pool.
According to Trump, in a statement from the Oval Office, individuals used tools like box cutters or very sharp razors to damage the pool, describing these acts as the work of “sick people.” He expressed that the responsible parties should face jail time, blaming the damage on “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” He mentioned that repairs include releasing some water from the pool.
There was speculation by Trump about fertilizer or chemicals being poured into the pool contributing to algae growth. He claimed acid was poured on the nearby grass, damaging it quickly. National Park Service employees and contractors have been using vacuums to clear green algae from the pool.
On Monday, Trump stated that chemicals were illegally placed in the water.
