Rescue Efforts in Caracas Following Earthquakes
Emergency workers are actively rescuing victims from the debris of collapsed structures after two strong earthquakes hit Venezuela’s capital, Caracas.
International Support and Acknowledgment
Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodríguez expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for the American support during the crisis. Rodríguez affirmed that the U.S. administration had maintained ‘constant contact’ and had offered solidarity and assistance. In her Facebook post, she stated, ‘Venezuela will never forget the hand extended to our people in these hard hours.’
The expressions of support came after President Trump made a commitment to assist Venezuela through a post on Truth Social. He assured that the U.S. was ‘ready, willing, and able to help’ following the seismic events. Trump described the situation as ‘massive in scale’ with significant casualties, and instructed government agencies to prepare for rapid response.
Casualty Figures and Anticipated Increase
The current death toll stands at 32, with more than 700 people injured, as announced by Acting President Rodríguez on state television. She warned that these figures do not account for the potential casualties in the state of La Guaira, describing it as a ‘true tragedy’ and a ‘disaster zone.’
Details on the Earthquakes
The earthquakes struck Venezuela around 6 p.m. ET. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the first earthquake, measuring 7.2 in magnitude, was centered near San Felipe, about 100 miles west of Caracas. This was followed by a second and larger quake, with a magnitude of 7.5, occurring 39 seconds later near the town of Yumare.
