Empowerment at the ‘Bald Meet-Up’ in Washington Square Park

A unique gathering took place on a rainy Saturday in Washington Square Park, bringing together a community of around 100 bald individuals. Both men and women attended, united in their pride and defiance against any stigma associated with baldness.

The event, aptly named the “Bald Meet-Up,” was organized by Justin Bradford, a freelance video producer. Attendees embraced chants of “Bald is beautiful!” echoing the sentiment of empowerment and community. Many attendees admitted they often concealed their baldness with hats, but on this day, the hats were left behind.

Comedian Phil Myers introduced himself simply, “My name is Phil and I’m bald,” rallying the crowd with cathartic chants. The sense of unity was palpable as participants shared a moment of acceptance. T-shirts were sold with a twist on the classic “I Love New York” logo, featuring a bald head instead of a heart.

Justin Bradford, aged 31, expressed his views on societal perceptions of baldness. He said, “I’m not going to say bald people are looked down upon, but sometimes people think you’re kind of unfortunate.” He emphasized that such perceptions were challenged when the community came together, embodying strength and pride.
