As political tensions rise in Washington, states across America are focusing on celebrating their unique histories during the nation’s 250th anniversary. Both historically red and blue states are preparing to highlight their contributions to the nation’s story.
Since the campaign in 2023, President Trump has promised a yearlong celebration for the nation’s 250th birthday. After returning to office, the celebrations have kicked off with a military parade and a UFC fight on the White House lawn. Recently, the Great American State Fair, a 16-day event on the National Mall, opened, stirring controversy over political motivations.
Despite criticism, state planners nationwide are organizing their own celebrations. They have been working tirelessly, often with limited budgets, to create local programs involving festivals, parades, rodeos, and potlucks. States are emphasizing their historical roles within the country.
For states outside the original 13 colonies, planning implies understanding their significance in 1776 and addressing ongoing cultural debates. President Trump’s push for a “patriotic” historical perspective has added a partisan tint to the celebrations. Nevertheless, some believe the 250th anniversary could ignite local pride, reminiscent of the 1976 Bicentennial.
John Dichtl, president of the American Association for State and Local History, remarked, “There’s a big wave coming, and it’s going to paint a really sharp contrast with the dysfunction in Washington.”
