Dave Portnoy Suggests Running Against NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani
Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, has expressed interest in potentially running against New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in future elections. Mamdani made history as New York’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, elected last November. Despite his popularity with constituents, some leaders, including Donald Trump, have criticized his politics as too extreme.
In an interview with Fox News’ Jesse Watters, Portnoy revealed his growing frustration with current events in New York, stating, “I always thought I’d never get involved in politics.” When asked if he would consider a political run against Mamdani, Portnoy responded affirmatively, though he remains uncertain about his chances of winning.
Portnoy, well-known for ventures like Barstool and his pizza reviews, emphasized his connection to New York. He mentioned his contributions to the city through efforts such as the Barstool Fund and support for local businesses. Reflecting on his career, he noted, “I’ve done real things, unlike these clown politicians.” His comments have drawn attention on social media, with a clip of the interview amassing over 5 million views.
Portnoy has continuously been vocal in his criticism of Mamdani. He has argued that Mamdani is leading New York towards more radical political change. Additionally, Portnoy critiqued Mamdani’s perceived political motivations in online messages.
Voices on the left view Mamdani as a progressive force. For example, Senator Bernie Sanders suggested Mamdani’s victory might inspire broader demands for change across the nation. However, conservatives, like House Speaker Mike Johnson, have warned of Mamdani’s rising influence, highlighting concerns over his political ideology.
Portnoy has not specified a political party affiliation for a potential candidacy. He has previously supported Donald Trump. His statements have fueled speculation online, reflecting a trend in recent years where public figures venture into politics. Celebrity candidacies, such as those by Donald Trump, Kanye West, and Spencer Pratt, showcase shifting perceptions of who is deemed politically capable.
Critics of Portnoy’s political aspirations include figures like Hemant Mehta and polling expert Nate Lichtman. They have questioned the seriousness of celebrity political candidates, viewing Portnoy’s comments skeptically. Democratic strategist Mike Nellis commented, “Acting like eating pizza and talking about sports on the internet is a real job is hysterical to me.” Although Portnoy’s interest is clear, the next mayoral election in New York City is set for 2029.
