Fans React to Jaylen Brown Trade
On Wednesday, Boston Celtics fans expressed outrage upon hearing the news that Jaylen Brown, a five-time All-Star and 2024 NBA Finals MVP, was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Celtics received former All-Star Paul George, along with first-round picks in 2028 and 2031, and second-round picks in 2028 and 2030.
The trade caused controversy among fans. Former Celtics player Kendrick Perkins strongly criticized the decision, branding it “one of the dumbest trades in NBA history.” He shared his disapproval on ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” stating, “If you’re gonna trade a guy that’s a top 10 player, you at least have to get back a guy that’s a top 15, top 20 player, and Paul George is not that.” Perkins continued by saying, “Paul George hasn’t been consistently good since I was skinny, and that’s been a long damn time,” referring to the trade as “Nothing but sloppy seconds.”

The Impact on Both Teams
According to Perkins, Celtics GM Brad Stevens might have inadvertently strengthened the 76ers by sending Brown to a roster that already includes All-Star players Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, along with emerging talent VJ Edgecombe. Brown’s departure follows the Celtics’ elimination by the 76ers in the first round of the NBA Playoffs several months ago.
For the Celtics, acquiring George brings a seasoned nine-time All-Star, last recognized in 2024. George, a former All-NBA First Team player in 2019, has twice been selected for the All-Defensive Team in his career. However, at 36, questions about his age and consistency linger. During his previous season with the 76ers, George averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, with a 43.9% field-goal percentage. While these are solid numbers, they didn’t significantly stand out.
Despite mixed performances, George had a notable playoff series against the Celtics. He recorded 16 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists in a Game 5 win and scored 23 points in the 76ers’ Game 6 victory.
The Future of the Trade
As the next season approaches, the real outcome of this trade will unfold based on how both teams perform with their new lineups. Success, or the lack of it, will determine which team benefits more from these changes.
