The port town of La Guaira, Venezuela, faced severe devastation from back-to-back earthquakes. The morning after the disaster, debris covered areas where apartments once stood.
“No,” a volunteer rescuer stated, “this is just the first mountain. There is more.”
The sheer scope of destruction made it difficult to fully understand the extent of the damage. Drone images later provided some insight, though only partially.
One notable site, OPPE 26, is a public housing project established during Hugo Chávez’s government. Many residents here had previously lost homes in the mudslides of 1999. Currently, La Guaira is believed to have sustained the most damage, with OPPE 26 expected to bear significant casualties.
At the scene, silence permeated except for the sounds of basic tools. Residents worked tirelessly to recover loved ones. Bodies retrieved from the rubble were respectfully covered by blankets.
Oswaldo Tovar, 45, used a small hammer to locate the remains of his wife, Ivonne Ladera, 46, and his daughter. He awaited assistance, unable to free them. The loss was profound, and when asked his daughter’s name, words failed him.
Images were captured by Adriana Loureiro Fernandez with drone assistance from Andres Conde.
