Controversy Surrounds ‘Muslims Only’ Swim Party
Aminah Knight’s plan to host a unique party for Muslim families on a significant Islamic holiday led to unexpected consequences. Two years ago, she decided to host a swim party for Eid al-Adha at an indoor water park in the Dallas suburbs.
The local mosque did not support her idea, as it was unconventional to mark the holiday with a swimming event. Knight, a former public-school teacher from New York City, felt strongly about creating an inclusive environment for girls and young women who enjoy swimming without drawing undue attention in traditional full-body swimwear.
Determined to push forward, she engaged with North Texas mosques to promote her event. Knight developed a website and flyer, gaining substantial interest. Hundreds of people attended her first event, and the water park agreed to host it again. The second year saw even greater attendance.
As this event became a cherished annual tradition for Muslims in the Dallas area, Knight prepared for a third swim party on Eid near the forthcoming holiday.
