How ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ Became a World Cup Anthem
Adoption by the US Team
The United States team’s embrace of John Denver’s iconic song, ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads,’ has become a hallmark at this World Cup. The spectacle of US players, alongside thousands of fans, singing it after their matches has captured attention. In a notable moment, US coach Mauricio Pochettino, originally from Argentina, celebrated by enthusiastically singing the song following a 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Bill Danoff, who co-wrote ‘Country Roads,’ expressed honor that the US team adopted the song. He shared that Denver, who tragically passed away in 1997, would have loved the recent match. Despite being down a player due to a red card, the US triumphed, and this resilience added to the celebration.
“It was such an exciting game. I thought, ‘Gee, I wish John was still here.'” — Bill Danoff
The John Denver estate is thrilled by the song’s revival, highlighting its universal appeal beyond geographical borders. Its lyrical simplicity suits any sing-along.
Origins of the Song
Contrary to popular belief, ‘Country Roads’ has roots in Maryland, not West Virginia. Danoff revealed the song was inspired by a drive with his former wife, Taffy Nivert, on Maryland’s Clopper Road. Although the song mentions West Virginia, Danoff said it stemmed from his personal experiences growing up in New England.
Initially, Danoff intended the song for Johnny Cash. However, when John Denver heard the unfinished version played by Danoff and Nivert, he persuaded them to record it for himself. Released in 1971, it became Denver’s biggest hit and remained popular for decades.
Denver later noted, “I don’t know all of the ways that song must have touched people, but I’m grateful that I have somehow been able to say something that has meaning for others.”
The Song’s Role in the World Cup
FIFA officials added ‘Country Roads’ to their postgame playlist to foster a shared experience between the US team and supporters. It first played after a 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle, creating an immediate impact among fans and on social media.
Despite a mixed reception at Los Angeles Stadium due to a loss to Turkey, the song regained popularity during a win against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Santa Clara. Players like Weston McKennie and Sebastian Berhalter celebrated passionately with fans.
Use in Sports
‘Country Roads’ is not new to sports. It is a tradition for West Virginia University football fans, who sing it after home victories. European sports, including the NFL games in Germany since 2022 and Oktoberfest celebrations, have also embraced it.
In the Premier League, Manchester United supporters adapted the song to reference their home, Old Trafford Stadium.
England’s Counterpart
England’s team has its anthem during this tournament: Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall.’ English players sing it post-victory, starting after their 4-2 win against Croatia. Captain Harry Kane cited it as a favorite moment, and the team continues this practice.
