America250 Time Capsule Marks the Nation’s 250th Birthday
As the 250th anniversary of the United States approaches, people across the country are gearing up for celebrations. While many are purchasing fireworks and exploring Revolutionary War sites, the federal government has embarked on a unique project: burying a time capsule filled with historical treasures.
On July 4, a special time capsule will be interred at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. It will hold objects and records from all 50 states as well as six territories. This capsule, weighing 900 pounds, will be safeguarded by a 1,100-pound cover and buried at a depth of at least eight feet. The goal is to preserve these items until July 4, 2276, when the capsule is planned to be unearthed.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is responsible for the creation of the capsule. The project involved using materials science, geometry, and physics to ensure that the items remain well-preserved. Michael Berilla, director of NIST’s fabrication technology office, led the project. He discussed the engineering challenges with The New York Times, highlighting the precision required to protect the items.
The contents of the capsule reflect the diversity of the United States. Maine contributed a message on whalebone, and the Northern Mariana Islands provided shells and necklaces. As a nod to its famous copper industry, Arizona included a copper ingot. Ohio, historically linked to aviation, sent a piece of fabric from the Wright brothers’ original flight.
