Keir Starmer announced that pubs in England will remain open until the end of World Cup matches, allowing fans to enjoy the games without interruption. This decision is widely welcomed by both supporters and the hospitality sector. The British Beer and Pub Association expressed excitement, while the Night Time Industries Association anticipated a positive impact on businesses.
However, the extended drinking hours raised concerns among police chiefs. The National Police Chiefs’ Council highlighted the link between alcohol and increased violence during tournaments. They were also concerned about the late notice affecting police scheduling.
Traditionally, pubs cease alcohol sales at 11 p.m. Previous exceptions allowed for late openings till 2 a.m. for England and Scotland matches, but overnight games had been unaddressed until now. For instance, Sunday night’s match may extend past 4 a.m., stirring debates over school attendance on Monday. Starmer asserted that children should still attend school, despite calls for leniency from England’s head coach, Thomas Tuchel.
Starmer’s spokesperson praised police adaptability and emphasized the timely announcement of licensing changes after England’s recent win. Meanwhile, employers anticipate a surge in leave requests or sick calls on Monday.
On the leadership front, Starmer plans to step down, to be succeeded by Andy Burnham, known for his approachable style. Both leaders share a passion for soccer. Starmer attended the Euro 2024 final to support England, a duty that may pass to Burnham if England reaches the World Cup final on July 19.
English soccer fans’ history of hooliganism is well-known, but stricter laws have lessened that reputation. Domestic celebrations often get rowdy during major victories, though disorderly conduct diminished over recent years.
