LONDON (AP) — England is set to face co-host Mexico at the World Cup on Sunday. The match will take place in Mexico City, a location known for its high altitude. This setting recalls the infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal by Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinals.
The Azteca Stadium, where the match will occur, is situated over 7,300 feet above sea level. This gives Mexico a significant advantage, as they remain undefeated in 10 World Cup games at this venue across three tournaments. England’s coach, Thomas Tuchel, acknowledges the challenge.
My understanding is that we cannot adapt to the altitude. That is just a huge advantage that Mexico will have,Tuchel said.
Competing at high altitudes requires adaptation to reduce fatigue due to lower pressure and oxygen availability. Sports scientists advise acclimation periods of at least two weeks or arriving just before the game. England plans to fly from Kansas City to Mexico, following a pre-tournament camp in Florida to adjust to the high temperatures.
Despite acknowledging the altitude issue, Tuchel finds the hydration breaks in the match crucial. He effectively leveraged them in England’s 2-1 comeback win against Congo in the round of 32.
I make the most of it. You know that I don’t really love them, I enjoy football more when it plays out with momentum … but of course they are here and why would I not try to take advantage?Tuchel noted.
The Azteca Stadium holds painful memories for England, having been eliminated by Argentina in 1986. Maradona’s two iconic goals in that match left a mark, with one considered one of the best in tournament history.
Tuchel remains optimistic, saying, Karma will come back for us. We will turn it around.
