The FBI, alongside other federal agencies, executed a significant operation titled Operation New Dawn in the Chicago area. This effort, over 60 days, resulted in more than 300 arrests and marked a collaborative approach to tackling violent crimes and crimes against children.
Kash Patel, the FBI Director, stated that the operation represented a comprehensive government strategy initiated under President Trump’s leadership. This operation aimed to curb violent crime in major American cities by combining efforts from 11 federal agencies. It successfully resulted in 305 arrests and the recovery of 24 missing children, involving charges ranging from robbery to drug trafficking.
Patel emphasized that this operation and future initiatives, like Summer Heat 2.0, underscore the commitment of the FBI and the Justice Department to dismantle criminal networks irrespective of their location. The agencies involved included the FBI, DEA, ATF, and HSI, among others.
Additionally, Patel highlighted the FBI’s role in facilitating international custody transfers for two key suspects originating from Iraq and Colombia, as mentioned in a statement from the United States Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Illinois.
Various offenders, including those linked to gun and drug trafficking as well as immigration violations, were apprehended as part of this operation. According to U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros, this operation marked a new era in American law enforcement, emphasizing unity under the United States flag rather than individual agency banners.
“To combat violence, federal law enforcement must move at the speed of violence,”
Boutros said, highlighting the success of the operation in uniting federal efforts to combat crime in Chicago.
Christopher Amon, ATF Special Agent in Charge in Chicago, acknowledged the vital teamwork and collaboration among the Chicago federal law enforcement partners, which was essential in removing violent offenders from the streets, thereby enhancing community safety.
Amongst the arrested were Felipe Dejesus Gomez Ramirez, a convicted murderer, and members of the Traveling Vice Lords gang, David Collins and Tyrone Thomas, involved in drug trafficking. These arrests contribute to making Chicago safer, according to HSI and federal authorities.
The operation, initiated on May 1, led to 179 criminal defendants being federally charged in 140 new cases, along with the recovery of 24 kidnapped children. Such collaborative efforts highlight the agencies’ dedication to reducing violent crime and ensuring public safety.
