The Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) defended its decision to consecrate bishops without papal consent, insisting the move preserved Catholic tradition amidst modern reforms. The Vatican excommunicated SSPX bishops and priests, warning followers they risk excommunication by participating in the schism.
SSPX, a traditional Catholic group, celebrates the Latin Mass and opposes modern reforms. On Wednesday, it consecrated four new bishops in Econe, Switzerland, without Pope Leo XIV’s approval. Pope Leo had urged SSPX not to proceed, but the society went ahead, resulting in severe Vatican sanctions.
Rev. Davide Pagliarani, SSPX’s leader, described the group as defenders of tradition and victims of unjust Vatican sanctions. He stated SSPX’s actions focus on saving souls amid confusion in the church. Despite the penalties, he affirmed SSPX’s continued devotion to the church.
SSPX, founded in 1970 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, opposes Second Vatican Council reforms which improved relations with other faiths and introduced Mass in local languages. SSPX claims to be more Catholic than the Vatican, causing tensions for decades.
The Vatican’s swift excommunication under Pope Leo XIV indicated a firm stance after years of negotiations. Rev. Robert Gahl, an ethics expert at The Catholic University of America, highlighted the significance of this decisive response, stressing the SSPX’s exclusion from full church communion due to disobedience.
SSPX maintained the consecrations addressed a necessity for the faithful needing their sacramental care, claiming it surpassed offerings from the broader church. The Vatican response warned the SSPX faithful of their departure from full communion by ignoring the pope.
