Reflections on Past Celebrations and Recipes
Recollections of the 1976 Bicentennial
In 1976, celebrations marked the United States bicentennial, an event filled with national pride. As a child of five at that time, the memories persist vividly, despite my young age. I annually serve as the grandstand announcer and judge for Munster’s holiday parade. Witnessing the patriotic spirit and shared smiles, regardless of weather conditions, offers reassurance.
A comparison between past and present Fourth of July fests may lead to a sense of diminished fanfare. The 1976 celebrations remain etched in memory, with Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom playing a major role. Our family, led by Chester and Peggy, visited the theme park during its fifth anniversary. The thematic celebration titled ‘Spirit of ’76’ showcased Disney’s dedication to patriotism. From parades to themed merchandise, the legacy of Uncle Walt, who passed in 1966, survived in his parks.
Traditional Offerings and Dedications
Disney’s parks feature patriotic elements, such as Main Street U.S.A. and Liberty Square, introduced in Orlando in 1971. Our mother collected souvenir trays and bowls with illustrations by Ken Haag, offering a tangible piece of history. My strongest recollections include the patriotic themed Magic Kingdom parade, with bands and floats highlighting historical characters. One particular float resembled an American eagle, with iconic Disney characters dressed in the ‘Spirit of ‘76’ attire. Captured by my mother’s Kodak camera, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy portrayed a fife player, drummer, and flag bearer.
“The celebrations of 1976 remain unmatched in scale and grandeur.”
Contemporary Observances
Today, Disney’s properties mark the 250th U.S.A. birthday with selected observances like fireworks and floats. However, the scale does not compare to the festivities of 1976. In tribute, I present a recipe for historic molasses cookies, honoring Margaret Kerry. Kerry, famed as the model for Tinker Bell, passed away at 97, leaving a legacy in the Disney realm.
Neverland’s Molasses Cookies
These cookies make an ideal treat for commemorating special occasions. Here’s the recipe:
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease two cookie sheets with margarine.
- Cream margarine in a large bowl until soft. Add sugar, molasses, and egg, mixing thoroughly.
- Sift flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon together. Gradually add to the first bowl, mixing well.
- Shape the dough into a round, wrap it, and chill for two hours.
- Roll out dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut cookies and place on sheets.
- Bake for 6-8 minutes, then cool on wire racks.
