Creating America’s 250th Birthday Cake Amid Political Challenges
Grace Pak felt disappointed when she learned there were no plans for an official cake at the semiquincentennial celebrations of the United States. Motivated by this oversight, she decided to take on the task herself. Throughout the week, she worked during late nights, focusing on intricate details like the torch held by the Statue of Liberty. Her journey, which intends to unify through dessert, required navigating the political complexities of Washington’s environment.
Earlier this year in January, Pak posed a critical question to the congressional commission responsible for planning the 250th anniversary celebrations of the nation. She asked, ‘Is anyone making a cake?’ The response was negative, leaving her puzzled about the lack of a cake for a significant birthday celebration.
This inspired Pak to embark on creating a monumental birthday cake for America. The cake, planned to be the size of a Mini Cooper, is a symbol of bipartisan cooperation. It features flying chocolate Black Hawk helicopters, an eagle on a branch, and the Statue of Liberty’s arm made from Rice Krispies Treats wrapped in green fondant. If she overcomes the final challenges, the cake will be unveiled during a ceremony at the Library of Congress on Saturday.
Grace Pak, aged 39, is an accomplished cake artist based in New York City. Her creations are showcased on the Food Network and at elegant weddings at the Plaza Hotel. She recognized the challenge in attempting to capture the country’s history and identity through ingredients as basic as flour and frosting. However, she did not initially foresee the political tensions that would arise.
‘It’s the 250th anniversary, and I sense a lack of excitement among many people,’ Pak noted. ‘I understand the source of their disinterest – it’s due to the current political climate. But I believe cake is the solution. Bring cake, and it can unite everyone.’
