Mira Nair Gains Recognition as Mother of New York City Mayor
Mira Nair, known for her impactful films on Indian social and cultural life, is experiencing a shift in public recognition. While her work continues to attract attention, her identity as the mother of Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s mayor, is becoming a focal point.
Nair, currently working on a film about Amrita Sher-Gil, the Hungarian-Indian painter, has noticed the difference. People now often recognize her as the mayor’s mother. This includes young artists on her film set who connect with Mamdani’s political views.
Her husband, Mahmood Mamdani, shares this experience. Recounting a visit to a coffee shop in Dar es Salaam, Nair noted how the owner offered him a free drink upon learning his relation to the mayor. This scene reflects a growing global influence.
“I feel like we have given him to the world,”
Nair expressed. Seated in a temporary apartment in Amritsar, where part of her film is shot, she described how she made it feel like home with rugs and a Jaipuri quilt. A campaign poster of her son stood prominently.
During an extensive interview, initially expected to last 90 minutes but extending over an hour more, Nair discussed her film tentatively titled “Amri.” It is scheduled for release in 2027. While sharing a meal of shrimp curry and rice, she talked about attending her son’s inauguration in New York. She filmed the event and visited Gracie Mansion, his official residence.
