Two hundred fifty years ago, the United States of America declared its independence. For Ireland, this represents more than an American milestone; it is part of its own narrative and shared history. From the onset, both Irish women and men embraced the ideals laid out in that Declaration. Today, their belief in these principles remains strong.
Ireland’s own quest for independence found inspiration in the American Declaration of Independence. Robert Emmet, a leader in the Irish republican movement, sought to achieve for Ireland the same assurances America secured through the efforts of Washington. The 1916 Proclamation underscored support from Ireland’s ‘exiled children in America.’
In modern history, the U.S. played a key role in fostering peace and reconciliation in Ireland. The Good Friday Agreement, which brought an end to thirty years of conflict in Northern Ireland, stands as a significant achievement in their shared history. American involvement remained bipartisan and crucial.
Today, Ireland and the U.S. share a dynamic relationship economically, culturally, and politically. Ireland ranks as the fifth largest foreign investor in America. Irish businesses have generated over 200,000 jobs across multiple sectors and states. This economic relationship is vital in advancing the technologies that shape the future.
From advanced manufacturing and pharmaceuticals to technology, aviation leasing, and renewable energy, Irish enterprise fuels American progress. Through major investments and strategic partnerships, Irish companies bolster U.S. competitiveness in AI, advanced manufacturing, and future data infrastructure.
In March, a visit to Philadelphia, recognized as a birthplace of America, allowed reflection on the ideas formed in the Assembly Room of Independence Hall that went on to change the world. This journey highlighted how both nations have advanced, often overcoming adversity.
Despite facing significant geopolitical challenges today, strong partnerships provide a means to collaborate effectively and work toward common goals for a more peaceful world. Ireland appreciates its partnership with the United States and the European Union in upholding interests and shared values.
Assuming the Presidency of the EU on 1 July, Ireland believes in the positive global impact of the U.S.-EU relationship. Daily, more than $4.5 billion in goods and services cross the Atlantic. Ireland aims to partner closely with both the United States and European allies to enhance this relationship.
Economic prosperity is crucial for the European Union’s success and enduring growth. Simplifying business regulations is part of advancing European competitiveness. At the core of Ireland’s EU Presidency is an old Irish proverb translating to ‘there is no strength without unity,’ which reflects the essence behind the founding of the United States.
Today, Ireland is a confident, innovative, and ambitious European nation. Valuing its EU membership, global partnerships, and friendship with the United States, Ireland remains committed. Strong partnerships thrive on trust and shared objectives enduring through differences.
Reflecting on America’s 250th Independence Day, the Great Seal of the United States resonates with the phrase advocated by Irishman Charles Thompson: ‘E pluribus unum,’ or ‘out of many, one.’ This principle helped shape a nation and will continue guiding the partnership ahead.
