Norman Darcy, previously a performance director for U.S. Soccer and the German Football Association, discussed the mindset needed when teams face Mexico at the Azteca. He likened this experience to the famous Shackleton expedition. Ernest Shackleton, an Irish explorer, is known for the 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. His ship was trapped in ice, turning a quest to cross Antarctica into a remarkable story of survival and return. Shackleton’s job advertisement highlighted the dangers of the journey, a mindset Darcy suggests England’s players adopt for their Mexico City match.
While the challenging wages and bitter cold of Shackleton’s journey are absent, England’s players will encounter high altitude at 7,220ft (2,200m) and a fiercely competitive Mexican team. Recent matches have seen Mexico capitalize on home advantages, both on and off the field. Last week, Ecuador was disturbed by fans who made noise near their hotel, leading to complaints about unfair practices.
Former U.S. player Charlie Davies recounted items being thrown at him during a 2009 match at the Azteca. Jozy Altidore shared an incident where a TV was thrown, and he was struck by a bag of pee. He described the experience as real and distressing.
Despite adjustments to reduce capacity and increase prices, Azteca remains a formidable venue. Mexico’s success there includes no losses in World Cup games and conceding only a few goals in the 2020s. Their record includes 70 wins, 17 draws, and two losses in 89 matches. The passionate atmosphere played a role in Mexico’s victory in recent World Cup matches.
Darcy, now with Chicago Fire, emphasizes preparation for such environments. He suggests players imagine the worst scenarios to become resilient. Preparation creates confidence. Similar to military methods, preemptively addressing potential issues helps deal with unexpected challenges.
Securing the team months in advance is part of the strategy, including security partnerships and logistical planning. During the U.S. game at the Azteca in 2022, six months of planning ensured cooperation with local police despite a past route issue.
Hotel choice affects the team’s experience, with options close to the airport or downtown. Ecuador’s experience of disturbances highlights the need for security measures. The U.S. federation hires personnel to monitor hotel safety and advises players to stay within hotel grounds.
Darcy warned of past incidents where food tampering harmed player health. Wealthy nations mitigate risks by bringing chefs or monitoring hotel kitchens. The U.S. ensures food safety and provides bottled water to avoid contaminants.
Altitude presents significant challenges. Less oxygen impacts physical performance. Adjusting includes sourcing oxygen tanks and conducting altitude training. Darcy noted individual sensitivity varies, with supplemental diets beneficial.
During the game, players focus on overcoming these difficulties. Preparation gives them the tools to face the Azteca’s unique demands.
