Fireworks have long been a staple of Fourth of July celebrations, lighting up the night sky across the United States. However, these colorful displays bring serious health concerns, particularly impacting the lungs.
According to the American Lung Association, nearly 300 million pounds of fireworks are released into the atmosphere annually in the U.S. This activity produces smoke containing tiny particles and gases such as sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. These elements are particularly harmful to lung health.
Fireworks release harmful metals, including aluminum, manganese, and cadmium, into the air. Some illegal fireworks may even contain lead, presenting extreme dangers due to its capacity to cause lasting health damage.
The association emphasizes the importance of avoiding firework smoke to prevent lung irritation and other serious health issues. Air pollution surges by an average of 42% on Fourth of July, as found in a 2015 study. This pollution can exacerbate symptoms for individuals with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Exposure to fine particle pollution has been linked to severe health outcomes, such as heart attacks, strokes, lung cancer, and even premature death. Vulnerable groups include children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with heart and lung conditions.
Dr. Afif El-Hasan, a board member of the Lung Association, provided some insights for those at high risk from fireworks exposure. Watching fireworks from a distance is advisable rather than using them at home.
For individuals with asthma, keeping a rescue inhaler accessible during fireworks events is crucial. Wearing an N95 mask can also help minimize exposure to particulates from fireworks smoke.
Dr. El-Hasan suggests being informed about local wind patterns to position oneself upwind of fireworks displays to avoid accumulating smoke. Attending with friends or family can be beneficial in case of health emergencies.
He advises taking all preventative medications before attending a fireworks event, parking close by for quick access to a vehicle if needed, and drinking water post-show to clear the upper airway. Changing and washing clothes upon returning home can reduce the risk of indoor smoke particle accumulation.
In cases of shortness of breath or chest pain, seeking immediate medical attention is essential.
