Egypt’s national football coach, Hossam Hassan, made a statement after his team’s win over Australia in the World Cup. Following a 1-1 draw, Egypt triumphed in the penalty shootout, defeating Australia 4-2 in the World Cup’s round of 32. This marked Egypt’s debut victory in the World Cup elimination round.
Hassan’s actions post-match caught international attention. He carried a Palestinian flag on the field saying, “My heart and soul are with them,” in reference to both Egyptians and Palestinians. This scene resonated with many, further highlighted by the video that went viral on social media. The crowd chanted “Free, free Palestine!” as he walked the pitch with the flag.
“It was the most significant scene,” said Yahia Qalash, former head of Egypt’s Journalists’ Union. “It was a telling scene in an exceptional moment.”
The display of the Palestinian flag ties back to ongoing tensions impacting more than 2 million residents in Gaza. These residents, many displaced and amid destruction, face uncertainty after a conflict initiated by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Retaliatory actions from Israel have resulted in considerable casualties, with Gaza’s Health Ministry reporting 73,066 Palestinians killed.
The conflict in the region has led to global pro-Palestinian demonstrations, with athletes from various sports expressing solidarity. Earlier, Lamine Yamal, during celebrations of the Spanish league title, also waved a Palestinian flag. His actions brought criticism from Israel’s defense minister, suggesting they incited hatred.
Hassan, a celebrated figure in Egyptian football since his days in the 1980s and 1990s, is not publicly associated with any religious or political groups. His gesture was a personal tribute to the “good and noble” Egyptian and Palestinian communities.
FIFA, overseeing the World Cup events, confirmed that displaying the Palestinian flag is allowed. “Flags representing all 211 FIFA Member Associations are permitted at FIFA tournaments, and supporters are welcome to display them in accordance with stadium regulations and the FIFA Stadium Code of Conduct,” the organization stated, reaffirming the acceptance of the Palestine Football Association as one of its members.
At times, FIFA has deemed some expressions as political on the pitch. Notably, during the Qatar World Cup in 2022, certain European teams were not allowed to wear anti-discrimination armbands supporting the “One Love” initiative. Also, disputes arose during this World Cup over the display of Iran’s pre-revolutionary flag by Iranian Americans, leading to a court ruling in support of FIFA’s ban.
