Kelsey Pfendler, an experienced Grand Canyon river rafting guide, has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first American woman to row solo across the mid-Pacific Ocean, completing her journey from California to Hawaii. Arriving in Honolulu on Friday night, Pfendler was met with a warm welcome from hundreds of supporters as she docked her 21-foot rowboat, Lily, after spending nearly 44 days at sea.
Pfendler’s journey began in May when she set out from Monterey, California, aiming to break records as the fastest solo female rower and the youngest American woman to complete this challenging route. Her adventures, documented on social media, captivated hundreds of thousands who followed her experiences through videos she posted during her oceanic journey.
According to the Ocean Rowing Society International, an organization responsible for maintaining records related to ocean rowing achievements, Pfendler has successfully surpassed both the previous female and male speed records. She completed the crossing in just under 44 days, a significant improvement over the previous female record of 86 days and the male record of 52 days, both verified by the society and Guinness World Records.
Throughout her journey, Pfendler shared insights into the logistics of her solo passage, detailing the challenges she faced. She spoke candidly about the toll on her hands, difficulty sleeping due to strong winds, and the mental and physical challenges posed by unpredictable currents and winds. Her video diaries also revealed her techniques for cooking, sun protection, laundry at sea, and fresh water production. At times, she interspersed her updates with humor, discussing her caffeine pills and unique ocean tan lines.
Beyond her recent achievement, Pfendler’s background includes eight years of guiding trips on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. In her reflections shared online, she expressed hope that her journey might inspire others to confront their personal challenges, stating, “Think about trying to find your own big, hard, scary thing.” She encouraged others to recognize their strength in beginning any daunting endeavor.
Pfendler plans to speak with the media soon. Despite requests for interviews, her team hasn’t responded immediately. However, her message to those following her journey remains clear: the strength to embark on a significant challenge is within everyone’s reach.
