In an unusual series of events, several attendees of Washington, D.C.’s Great American State Fair found themselves needing life support due to extreme heat at the event. This prompted the organizers to shut down the fair temporarily on Friday. The National Weather Service (NWS) recorded triple-digit temperatures in the capital, prompting emergency measures.
A powerful heat dome affected much of the eastern United States, with forecasters predicting a likelihood of hundreds of daily records being broken as the Fourth of July nears. Freedom 250, the event’s organizer, decided to close the fair temporarily until 5 p.m. on Friday. In a statement, they emphasized the priority of ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved, including guests, volunteers, and staff.
Over 40 Visitors Needed Medical Attention
Before the closure, DC Fire and EMS reported 44 patient interactions, with 11 requiring hospitalization for various illnesses. Among them, seven were given advanced life support while four received basic assistance. Over a dozen of these cases were due to heat-related issues, emergency services informed NBC Washington. Responders from the Department of Health and Human Services and George Washington University Hospital were present on site as well.
The organizers, Freedom 250, announced that both the Great American State Fair and the FIFA Fan Zone would resume operations at 12 p.m. on Saturday, instead of the originally planned opening time of 10 a.m.
The organization advised, “With warm temperatures expected, guests are encouraged to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, apply sunscreen, take breaks in the shade, utilize cooling areas, and look out for family and friends.”
They also arranged for complimentary water distribution, water refill stations, cooling tents, and air-conditioned buses throughout the event venue. All 15 large pavilion structures between 4th and 14th Streets are equipped with air conditioning for those needing relief from the heat.
Unusual Measures for Fending Off Heat
Some attendees took unforeseen steps to combat the heat. One fairgoer shared her experience with Fox 5, describing how she sought refuge in a baptism pool within a religious tent due to the overwhelming heat. With no air conditioning in most booths, she experienced symptoms of heat stress before finding relief in the tent.
“None of these booths have air conditioning, we don’t know what happened, but I started seeing stars,” she recounted. She explained that upon entering the religious tent, she gladly accepted the offer to cool off in the baptism pool.
Afterwards, she received care from the medic tent, where they provided electrolytes to counter her symptoms.
Weather Forecast for July 4th
The NWS has projected scattered showers and thunderstorms on July 4th in Washington, D.C. Showers and potential thunderstorms are expected after 5 p.m. with temperatures predicted to reach as high as 102 degrees. The peak heat index could climb to 113 degrees due to the combination of humidity and air temperature.
On Saturday night, the forecast suggests showers and thunderstorms will continue before 1 a.m., followed by isolated showers and thunderstorms past 2 a.m. The low temperature is anticipated to be around 75 degrees, with a 60 percent chance of precipitation, according to the NWS.
