In New York City, Times Square is marking America’s 250th birthday with coordinated ball drops to celebrate in each American time zone. The event began at 10 a.m. Eastern time for the U.S. territories and concluded at 7 a.m. for American Samoa. Rosie Rios, chair of America250, emphasized the importance of uniting the country through these celebrations.
Security measures in Washington, D.C. are heightened for the America 250 events. An extreme heat warning has led to the cancellation of D.C.’s Independence Day Parade. Organizers prioritized participant safety due to expected temperatures reaching up to 115 degrees. The Great American State Fair also closed in the afternoon but planned to reopen later, offering cooling tents and water distribution.
CBS’s “The Great American Block Party 250” will feature performances from artists like the Zac Brown Band and Queen Latifah. Hosted from the Washington Monument, it will include celebratory moments and end with a massive fireworks display over the nation’s capital.
D.C. celebrations will also feature military flyovers and an extensive fireworks show. Interim Police Chief Jeff Carroll highlighted the scope of the planned fireworks display. President Trump is set to speak prior to the show.
