Commemorating Resilience and Unity on America’s 250th and 9/11 Anniversary
As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, the nation also marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Elizabeth L. Hillman, President and CEO of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, highlights how these milestones reflect the country’s history and resilience.
According to Hillman, these anniversaries are interconnected, with 9/11 being a pivotal part of the nation’s past. It’s vital for future generations to understand how this event shaped the country. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost when hijacked planes hit the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Hillman emphasizes the importance of educating the 100 million Americans born since or too young to remember 9/11. Understanding the recovery efforts and unity after the attacks is crucial. “There’s nothing like 9/11 to demonstrate our ability to come together and rebuild,” Hillman states.
The museum plays a crucial role in preserving this history. Hillman sees it as a testament to New York City’s resilience and the nation’s perseverance. The center of the rebuilt World Trade Center is a monument honoring those lost, highlighting collective efforts to overcome adversity.
This year, the museum introduced the “Our Flag Was Still There” exhibit. It showcases flags and artifacts from first responders, veterans, and citizens affected by 9/11. Notable items include the Ground Zero flag raised by FDNY firefighters and the one carried during the mission to eliminate Usama bin Laden.
Hillman notes the role of symbols like the flag in uniting people, especially when division seems prevalent. On July 4, an American flag will be placed at each victim’s name on the memorial, symbolizing the country’s recovery and unity.
Looking forward, the museum plans to offer free admission to veterans in recognition of their service post-9/11. Hillman expresses that honoring those inspired to serve is essential at this time.
