Sepp Blatter, the former president of FIFA, has openly criticized the organization’s recent decision to lift a red-card suspension for U.S. soccer player Folarin Balogun. The decision allows Balogun to participate in a pivotal World Cup match against Belgium. This move has garnered praise from former President Donald Trump while causing discontent among Belgian soccer officials.
The situation unfolded following a call from Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino after a match between the U.S. and Bosnia-Herzegovina, during which Balogun received a red card. The Associated Press, citing an anonymous source, reported that Trump requested FIFA review the incident.
In response to Trump’s involvement, Blatter expressed his concerns through a post on platform X. He emphasized that red card decisions should be reconsidered based on rules, evidence, and decisions by independent bodies rather than political influences. Blatter asked a pressing question regarding the integrity and independence of FIFA’s disciplinary actions.
Blatter, who served as FIFA’s president from 1998 until his resignation in 2015 amid corruption investigations, has been vocal about his disapproval of political interventions in soccer. Earlier this year, he supported a proposed fan boycott of World Cup matches in the United States due to Trump’s controversial policies.
Newsweek has made efforts to obtain further comments from Blatter through an email sent to the Sepp Blatter Foundation.
This situation remains dynamic, with further updates anticipated.
