Belgium’s soccer federation received permission to appeal FIFA’s decision to suspend the red card ban imposed on USA World Cup star Folarin Balogun. According to The Athletic, the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) seeks a detailed explanation from FIFA concerning the suspension. The RBFA has also requested a report from FIFA’s officiating committee.

The U.S. and Belgium are set to commence their Round of 16 game in Seattle at 8 p.m. ET. FIFA’s decision to lift Balogun’s suspension was made on Sunday. This marks the first instance since 1962 that a World Cup red card did not culminate in a suspension. Balogun was initially red-carded for a foul on Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic following a VAR review.
The RBFA expressed its astonishment while Belgium coach Rudi Garcia ridiculed FIFA’s verdict. Garcia commented through a translator, “I didn’t know that in the offices of FIFA the fifth of July was the first of April in Europe.” He emphasized that the federation prioritizes fair play and ethics in football.

When questioned about a possible appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Garcia did not comment on any potential influence from President Donald Trump on FIFA’s decision.
The RBFA’s statement highlighted its exploration of all potential remedies to ensure fair play across the tournament. It was reported that President Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to reconsider the red card.
FIFA announced a year-long probation period where if Balogun repeats a similar offense, the suspension will be reinstated along with any additional penalties for the new infraction.
U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino praised FIFA’s decision, stating, “We were punished enough against Bosnia and Herzegovina to play with 10 men for 30 minutes in a decision that was completely unfair.”
