Jayson Tatum opened up about the “abrupt ending” to Jaylen Brown’s time with the Boston Celtics, calling it a challenging aspect of the NBA. Earlier this month, Brown was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George and several future draft picks.
Tatum, a prominent figure in the NBA, shared his thoughts during an event in Massachusetts where he was promoting his children’s book. The discussion, led by Howard Bryant, covered various aspects of Tatum’s career, including his future without Brown as a teammate.
“It’s strange,” Tatum admitted. “Playing nine years with someone, going to the Finals and winning a championship together, builds a connection. Finding out they’re no longer on your team is tough.” He emphasized the need to appreciate past experiences in light of such sudden changes.
Tatum highlighted Brown’s contributions to Boston and acknowledged the need to embrace new teammates. Despite past camaraderie, the focus remains on welcoming fresh faces and advancing together.
Recent insights, shared by ESPN’s Shams Charania, suggested Tatum and Brown’s personal relationship had almost entirely faded in the past year. Brown, the Celtics’ No. 3 draft pick in 2016-17, joined Tatum, who was drafted the following season in the same position. They seemed poised for greatness after winning the 2024 championship but recent events have directed them on separate paths.
Brad Stevens, Celtics general manager, confirmed that Tatum wasn’t consulted about Brown’s trade. “How little I sleep shows how much I consider these decisions,” Stevens remarked.
The trade left many stunned, as Boston parted with a player who was instrumental in their 2024 championship victory. Brown’s recent season included leading the Celtics to a strong finish in the Eastern Conference, raising questions about the team’s future without him.
While recovering from a severe Achilles injury, Tatum missed significant playtime last season. He played 16 regular-season games and was partly available for the playoffs. He notably missed Game 7 against Philadelphia due to injury management, which saw the Celtics lose with Brown at the helm.
