FIFA Investigates Racist Abuse at World Cup
FIFA has initiated an investigation into allegations of racist abuse directed at YouTuber IShowSpeed during a World Cup match. This incident adds to the racism controversies affecting the tournament. FIFA confirmed the investigation after learning of an episode involving the content creator, Darren Watkins Jr., during Argentina’s Round of 32 win over Cape Verde at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 3.
Video footage from Watkins’ livestream shows him interacting with an Argentina supporter. The fan allegedly made a racist comment towards Watkins, prompting FIFA’s inquiry.
“FIFA strongly condemns racism, hate and discrimination in all forms,” the organization stated. “The FIFA World Cup celebrates unity, diversity, and respect, bringing together cultures globally. Those undermining these values are not welcome in our game.”
Efforts to reach IShowSpeed and FIFA for additional comments have been made by Newsweek.
Who Is Influencer IShowSpeed?
Darren Watkins Jr., widely known online as IShowSpeed, is a prominent internet personality recognized for his lively gaming videos, cultural tours, and sports content. The 21-year-old, originating from Cincinnati, Ohio, began his streaming career there before moving to Florida. Over the years, he has rapidly gained popularity on YouTube, with over 50 million subscribers. His content includes international travel streams and collaborations with sports figures.
Renowned for his admiration of Cristiano Ronaldo, Watkins frequently attends major soccer events. During the 2026 World Cup, FIFA collaborated with him on tournament content, involving broadcasts from stadiums and interviews with football personalities like FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Despite his public presence, Watkins maintains privacy regarding family matters, although his father, Darren Watkins Sr., appears occasionally in his videos. Entertainment estimates place his net worth around $35 million, although no verified figure exists publicly.
Alleged Racist Incident: What We Know
The incident took place during Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Cape Verde in Miami. Watkins wore a Cape Verde jersey while streaming from the stands when the confrontation with an Argentina supporter occurred. Video circulating online shows the supporter making a racist remark toward Watkins before security escorted him away.
FIFA has withheld identifying the supporter or any disciplinary measures, as the investigation is ongoing. As of now, Watkins hasn’t publicly addressed FIFA’s announcement, and his representatives haven’t replied to media inquiries.
FIFA’s Zero Tolerance Approach To Racism
FIFA’s probe emphasizes its zero-tolerance policy on discrimination at the upcoming expanded 2026 World Cup. The organization insists racism holds “no place in football” and pledges thorough investigation of the alleged abuse. FIFA has introduced protocols to combat racism, including reporting systems, stadium announcements, and various sanctions like fines, stadium closures, and disciplinary actions against teams or individuals.
Other Controversies at the World Cup
French captain Kylian Mbappé recently criticized Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla after her racist social media remarks following France’s World Cup win over Paraguay. Amarilla’s comments provoked international backlash, leading French authorities to investigate, while Paraguay’s government disassociated from her statements.
Furthermore, Argentina fans faced scrutiny again during their game against Egypt. Social media videos show Argentinian supporters throwing beer and using offensive language against Egyptian fans. Egypt’s manager, Hossam Hassan, was filmed spitting toward Argentina supporters after they waved an Israeli flag. Hassan is a vocal supporter of Palestine.
What Happens Next?
FIFA hasn’t specified a timeline for completing its investigation or revealing the supporter involved. Should the investigation affirm violations of anti-discrimination regulations, FIFA might impose sanctions under its code against racist conduct.
For now, the investigation continues, with FIFA collecting information before announcing further action.
