Iranian Revolutionary Guard members now frequently showcase Kalashnikov-style assault rifles to the public in Tehran. Military vehicles with Soviet-era machine guns parade through the capital, and a ballistic missile even appeared at a mass wedding. These demonstrations coincide with heightened tensions as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens military action if negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz falter.
The weapons displays serve as both a warning and a source of morale. Iran faces threats from the U.S., such as potential seizure of their enriched uranium and arms support to anti-government protesters. Hard-liners find reassurance in these displays, which also entertain citizens facing economic instability, marked by layoffs, business closures, and soaring prices for essentials.
Ali Mofidi, a Tehran resident, described attending weapons training as crucial during this period, stating, “This is necessary for all our people to get trained because we are in a war situation these days.” State media consistently encourages Iranians to join the ‘Janfada,’ those willing to sacrifice for their country. Officials claim over 30 million have volunteered, although this figure is unverifiable and no mass mobilization has occurred.
Public broadcasts, including armed presenters on state TV, aim to bolster national fervor. Journalist Soheila Zarfam wrote in the Tehran Times, “…My life might end, but Iran would endure.” However, Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate, criticizes the display of weaponry to youths, comparing it to child arming by militant groups in other nations.
Weapon training, rare before, has become common. Nomads recently marched with historical firearms, though most weapon demonstrations focus on Tehran. During a recent training session, participants practiced with assault rifles, despite rudimentary instruction and safety breaches. Trainer Hadi Khoosheh noted that those completing the course receive a ‘Janfada’ card, signaling basic preparedness.
Mofidi firmly stated, “We will stand against (the Americans) and won’t give up even an inch of our soil.”
