The Philadelphia Phillies secured a dramatic 23-22 victory against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. This historic game set several records, including most total bases in a game with 97 and most home runs in a game, totaling 11. The Phillies recorded 48 total bases while the Cubs achieved 49. The Phillies also set records for giving up six home runs and scoring 23 runs. The game kicked off with both teams making a strong start, scoring several runs in the first inning.
Mike Schmidt hit the decisive home run in the 10th inning while Dave Kingman dazzled for the Cubs with three homers. Teammates Bill Buckner, Steve Ontiveros, and Jerry Martin contributed with one each, while Bob Boone, Gary Maddox, and Randy Lerch homered for the Phillies.
WGN-TV replayed this legendary game throughout the cold winter nights of 1979-80, keeping baseball fans entertained.
