Vincent Pastore, known for his role as Tony Soprano’s friend-turned-informant in HBO’s The Sopranos, has died at age 80. His manager, Robert Attermann, confirmed that Pastore passed away at his home in the Bronx, New York. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Robert Attermann expressed that while the world remembers Pastore as ‘Big Pussy’ from The Sopranos, he was much more to those who knew him personally. The Sopranos featured Pastore as Salvatore Bonpensiero, a close friend and enforcer for Tony Soprano, who ultimately cooperated with the FBI, threatening the mob’s operations in New Jersey. This role cemented his fame in 1999.
Pastore was born in the Bronx and grew up in New Rochelle, New York. He served in the U.S. Navy and attended Pace University, according to an IMDb biography. His career in acting gained momentum after friendships with actors Matt Dillon and Kevin Dillon. During a 2015 interview on Good Day New York, he shared that these friendships were pivotal in his decision to pursue acting seriously.
He became a recognizable face through roles in mob films and TV dramas, including Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn. However, his portrayal of the multifaceted mobster in The Sopranos brought him widespread recognition, making him a household name. The Bronx Walk of Fame inducted him in 2016, highlighting his contribution to television through his nuanced performances.
Attermann, who represented Pastore for over 30 years, remembers him as one of the kindest and most generous individuals. Pastore never refused a fan seeking a photograph or autograph, always showing appreciation for his supporters. He was passionate about acting, offering guidance and support to young actors.
Attermann concluded with a heartfelt tribute, saying, “I will miss his friendship, his loyalty, his humor, and his generosity. May his memory be a blessing.”
