Attending a Major League Baseball game requires constant vigilance. Unfortunately, fan Jamie Golla learned this the hard way. She was at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, enjoying the Mariners’ game against the San Diego Padres.
While sitting in the lower bowl on the third-base side, Golla’s friend recorded a selfie video as Padres player Sung-mun Song stepped up to bat in the fifth inning. Suddenly, the mood shifted from fun to painful.
The video captured a foul ball striking Golla on the head. The sound of the impact was alarming. Unlike routine foul balls, this one came with such force that fans nearby didn’t attempt to catch it as a souvenir.
Golla was quickly taken to Harborview Medical Center. She described her condition to the New York Post, saying, “I’m feeling a little better than yesterday. My head is still a bit swollen, and I’ve been getting minor headaches here and there, but overall I’m doing okay.” Despite the incident, she appreciated the support from others.
After the incident, a Mariners staff member followed up with Golla, offering her and her friends tickets for a future game. The Mariners lost to the Padres that night, 2-0.
Fans returning to T-Mobile Park should remember the importance of staying alert at all times to avoid similar experiences.
