At least 72 migrants have died following a desperate attempt to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. This incident has intensified the debate over immigration policies in Europe.
Spanish authorities are still searching the waters near Ceuta for more victims. An estimated 50,000 to 60,000 migrants, mostly young men, approached the small Spanish territory in North Africa. Many drowned trying to cross, while others died in a stampede by a barrier.
The influx temporarily increased Ceuta’s population of about 84,000 by more than half. By the weekend, some migrants returned to Morocco, while others remained in Ceuta or evaded authorities.
Spain deployed its military in response. Far-right politicians urged for stricter border controls and demanded the removal of remaining migrants. Santiago Abascal, leader of Spain’s Vox party, visited Ceuta, criticized the government, and described the situation as an “invasion.”
During a rally in Ceuta, European Parliament member Alvise Pérez faced counterprotesters and needed police assistance to leave the area safely.
Political and Public Reactions
Local residents mourned the loss of life amid the political tensions. Karima Abenaz, a resident of Ceuta with Moroccan ties, expressed pain over the deaths. She emphasized the need for jobs and rights in Morocco to prevent such tragedies.
Others argued that migrants should not be blamed. Mohamad Abdelkader Driss, a waiter in Ceuta, stated that the authorities bear responsibility for opening the borders.
Ceuta, known for its diverse communities of Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Hindus, now faces security concerns. The possibility of future mass crossings remains a topic of discussion.
The U.S. State Department increased its Travel Advisory for Ceuta, urging travelers to reconsider visits due to potential security risks from the mass arrival of migrants.
