Unexpected Discovery in an Antique Frame

Samantha Ramsdell, a visitor to an antique shop in Arundel, Maine, stumbled upon a historic find in a vintage picture frame bought for $15. She initially purchased the frame due to its antique charm, intending to discard the photo within it.

“I honestly just loved the frame,” Ramsdell shared with Newsweek, noting that the photo inside seemed a bit eerie, but her interest lay entirely in the frame itself.

Antiques continue to captivate American buyers. A 2025 survey involving over 2,600 antique dealers and appraisers from the U.S. and Canada highlights sustained consumer interest in antiques, vintage items, and collectibles. An emerging segment of younger collectors plays a growing role in this fascination.

Various reasons underpin this interest. Some buyers appreciate the nostalgia and uniqueness of antiques, while others value the craftsmanship and historical significance often absent in mass-produced modern goods. Many view acquiring antiques as an environmentally responsible choice compared to purchasing new products.

Uncovering Hidden Histories

The allure of antiques lies in their concealed stories, revealed unexpectedly at times, as illustrated by Ramsdell’s experience. Initially drawn by the frame’s appearance, Ramsdell soon discovered it held more than she anticipated.

“As soon as I got home, I removed the photo and put up one of my existing prints,” Ramsdell explained. “Upon removing the backing, I found another image behind it revealing a George Washington lithograph.”

Estimating the Lithograph’s Value

A devoted antique enthusiast with connections to fellow collectors and experts, Ramsdell’s investigation revealed the lithograph might be worth significantly more than her $15 frame purchase.

“It’s an original lithograph of George Washington from 1864 during the Civil War,” she noted, with valuations suggesting it could exceed $500 in worth.

Theories on Its Concealment

Ramsdell speculates on how the lithograph stayed hidden behind the frame. “Perhaps it was intentionally concealed,” she muses, contemplating that the original proprietor’s passing might have led to its donation without knowledge of the hidden content.

Despite the potential for substantial monetary gain, Ramsdell isn’t eager to sell.

“For now, I’m keeping it,” she declared, optimistically speculating on increasing value if maintained properly, unless prompted by a compelling offer.

Exploring the Lithograph’s History

Ramsdell has engaged a local historical society to explore further details of the lithograph’s origins. She hopes her find will inspire others to explore thrift shops.

“You never know what might be hiding behind an old photo or tucked away in the pocket of a vintage jacket,” she remarked.
