Kylian Mbappé’s Warning About France’s Political Landscape
Kylian Mbappé, captain of France’s national soccer team, has openly criticized the far right in France, especially as elections approach. He expressed concerns in Vanity Fair, stating that a victory for the far-right party, National Rally, could have significant impacts on the country.
With presidential elections looming, National Rally’s candidates, Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen, are leading in polls, sparking further dialogue about the intersection of sports and politics. Mbappé insists athletes are citizens with the right to voice political opinions.
“We are citizens,” Mr. Mbappé affirmed. “We have a say, just like everyone else.”
Mbappé’s stature in France is high due to his soccer achievements. Emerging from Paris’s working-class suburbs, he helped France win the World Cup in 2018. At 27, he remains a cherished figure in both sports and broader national identity.
President Emmanuel Macron once sought to keep Mbappé loyal to Paris St.-Germain amid interests from Real Madrid, showcasing his immense value both to his club and his country.
