Abdullahi Abdi Abdirahman, accompanied by his family, embarked on a grueling nine-day trek across southern Somalia. With their livestock decimated by drought, they hoped for refuge and support in Dollow, near the Ethiopian border.

Their journey of 140 miles brought them to a site that had once seen support from international organizations. Yet, upon their arrival in January, the aid landscape had shifted dramatically. The dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (U.S.A.I.D.) under President Trump left Somalia without a crucial support system. In Europe, aid budgets were slashed, leading organizations to prioritize limited resources elsewhere.

Dollow, once a beacon for the distressed, was no longer a priority. While the physical infrastructure remained, aid resources dwindled. Cash grants for food were halted, and health facilities suffered from a lack of medicines and staff.

Compounding these challenges, geopolitical tensions rose, with the United States and Israel initiating conflict with Iran. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz obstructed key exports like oil and fertilizers, inflating shipping costs. For Somalia, which imports 70% of its food, prices of basic staples like rice and wheat flour surged significantly.

The humanitarian crisis unfolding in Dollow is a stark reminder of the dire consequences faced by vulnerable regions amid global turmoil.
