Robby Albarado: Celebrated Jockey Passes Away at 52

Former jockey Robby Albarado, renowned for his achievements in horse racing, has passed away at the age of 52. Albarado’s notable career included two Preakness victories, marking him as a top figure in the sport.

A spokesperson from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, confirmed Robby Albarado’s death after receiving information from numerous friends and family members. Recently, Albarado had undergone a medical procedure to insert a stent to relieve a blockage near his heart, as shared by trainer Kenny McPeek, who employed him as an exercise rider.

Churchill Downs president Mike Anderson expressed the sadness felt by many, stating in a public announcement, “Saying goodbye to someone who left us too soon is extremely difficult. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and numerous friends.”

Albarado is best remembered for his success riding Curlin, securing victories at the Preakness and Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2007. He achieved another Triple Crown success aboard Swiss Skydiver in the 2020 Preakness. Within his career, Albarado accumulated over 5,222 wins, including two other Breeders’ Cup titles.

Having retired in 2022, Albarado continued to contribute to the horse racing community by working with Kenny McPeek, who had trained Swiss Skydiver, maintaining his presence in the sport.

Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, Albarado started his career riding at bush tracks before transitioning to professional racing. Over his extensive career, he participated in more than 34,000 races, earning a total of approximately $221 million.
