How Distinctive American English Emerged

In a recent episode of the “In Pursuit of Happiness” podcast, host Judy Woodruff engaged linguists Anne Curzan and Valerie Fridland in a discussion about the unique development of American English. They explored how early Americans altered the language through changes in pronunciation, spelling, and the creation of new words and dialects.

Additionally, American English incorporates many words and phrases borrowed from Native American languages, reflecting the unique cultural landscape. New words were created to describe the unfamiliar experiences, surroundings, and technologies of the New World.
