Arrest in Connection to Penn State Student’s Murder

The U.S. Marshals have announced the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect in Colorado linked to the murder of Penn State student Billy Schmidt. Philadelphia police confirm that two teens, including this suspect, will be charged as adults for the robbery and shooting on June 6. The second suspect, Kaiseem Smith, remains a fugitive with a wanted poster issued by authorities.

Additional Violent Crime Tie

A 19-year-old linked to the robbery associated with Schmidt’s murder is also under investigation for another violent incident in Philadelphia. An off-duty police officer exchanged gunfire with suspected car thieves. Khadfi Fleming is a person of interest in the assault on the officer, and the U.S. Marshals Service is offering a cash reward for leads on his location.

The confrontation with the officer occurred on Monday when thieves targeted the officer’s Dodge Charger. The officer pursued and confronted them, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. The suspects were not hit and managed to escape. Authorities later found the officer’s vehicle damaged along with several 9mm shell casings. Investigators discovered the suspects had switched to another stolen car, a Lexus, which was later abandoned.

Ongoing Search for Fleming

The U.S. Marshals Service has named Fleming as a person of interest in the Monday attack. Despite not being charged for it, authorities were already searching for him due to a robbery charge linked to Billy Schmidt’s murder on June 6.

Schmidt, a 22-year-old Penn State student, was shot dead while returning from an NBA Finals watch party. Surveillance captured Schmidt during his final moments, heard asking for his stolen phone before being shot. His father, Bill Schmidt, shared that his son was caring and peaceful, adding that the loss was a tragedy.

Search for Another Suspect

Azzubair Outen-Fleming, 16, was arrested in Colorado a month after Schmidt’s death. Authorities found him at a relative’s home, where he initially attempted to hide his identity. Philadelphia Police say he will face a murder charge.

The other teen, Kaiseem Smith, has surrendered. Both are charged with Schmidt’s murder during the armed robbery.

Billy Schmidt was a digital journalism and media student at Penn State, expected to graduate in December. As the investigation progresses, authorities are also looking into whether the older Fleming had involvement in the latest violent event.
