This week, a political move by Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson led to Councilmember Nithya Raman losing her position as chair of the city’s housing and homelessness committee. This decision came during Raman’s campaign against Mayor Karen Bass. Raman viewed this as retribution for her call to audit the mayor’s homeless programs. In a video statement, she accused the mayor and allies of protecting a flawed system. Many in City Hall anticipated that Raman would voice opposition if removed, portraying herself as a victim.

Harris-Dawson explained that the removal was part of a broader plan to enhance committee efficiency, splitting Raman’s committee into separate housing and homelessness committees. This idea was previously discussed, but Raman disagreed on separating the topics. Harris-Dawson stressed the need for focused leadership on the homelessness committee due to ongoing crises.

“We’ve got to be able to move, and move in the most efficient manner possible,” Harris-Dawson said.

As part of the reshuffle, Councilmember Ysabel Jurado now leads the new homelessness and health committee. She also joins the housing committee, chaired by Councilmember Imelda Padilla.

New Committee Assignments and Future Implications

Other committee changes included Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez leading the economic development committee, and Monica Rodriguez taking charge of the parks committee. These changes might influence future votes on Harris-Dawson’s presidency, though he dismissed any speculation about motives.

Although Raman will not chair the homelessness committee, she maintains a position on it and will lead the immigration and civil rights committee. She also gained a seat on the public safety committee. Raman expressed that committee chairs have more sway, including setting agendas.

Jurado’s district has faced controversies with recent homelessness counts, including a 23% increase in unsheltered homelessness and issues with data accuracy. Harris-Dawson also questioned data from his district, suggesting potential errors. Despite these challenges, LAHSA did not comment on these concerns.
