Firefighters Struggle to Stabilize Chemical Tank in Southern California
An industrial tank in Southern California, containing about 7,000 gallons of a highly flammable toxic chemical, remains at risk of explosion or rupture for the fourth straight day. This situation has kept over 40,000 residents evacuated from their homes.
The tank is located at a plant in Garden Grove, operated by GKN Aerospace. This UK-based company is known for manufacturing aircraft components.
On Thursday, the tank became increasingly pressurized, releasing gas capable of triggering an explosion. Firefighters responded by using large quantities of water to cool the tank. However, GKN Aerospace’s team faced issues with injecting a neutralizing agent due to a failed valve.
No one has ever had this situation before because the chemical is so volatile,
stated TJ McGovern, the interim fire chief of the Orange County Fire Authority. He described it as an unprecedented event.
The chemical, methyl methacrylate, is crucial in producing resins and acrylic plastics, including plexiglass.
