Scottie Scheffler demonstrated his golfing prowess at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, securing a win by eight strokes ahead of Si Woo Kim. After enduring five second-place finishes this season, his victory in Memphis, Tennessee, brought much-needed satisfaction. In a conversation with CBS Sports’ Amanda Balionis, Scheffler expressed his thoughts on the win.
“I’ve had some close calls this year. I feel like I kept saying at the end of each tournament, ‘I feel like I’m playing pretty good, just little things aren’t going my way,'” said Scheffler.
Despite facing challenges, like when his shot hit a sprinkler system and rolled into water, Scheffler remained focused. “Going into today, I just wanted to try to do my best, try to execute,” he said. “I did a good job of staying in it and bouncing back … Was able to relax.”
His last win occurred at the American Express Golf Tournament in January. Scheffler had multiple runner-up finishes this year, including the 3M Open, Cadillac Championship, RBC Heritage, Travelers Championship, and The Masters. During the interview, Balionis noted the statistical success of Scheffler’s season and asked about his proudest achievement.
“I think I’ve been really consistent … Outside of Amex, I felt like I didn’t play as good early in the year as I could have. I felt like I was battling my swing a little bit. But just staying consistent, staying in it each week. That’s what I’m most proud of I think, is just having the ability to fight and claw my way through things,” he shared.
He continued, “It’s nice to be able to pay it off with a win this week. Statistics are one thing, but being able to win golf tournaments is another.” The victory marked Scheffler’s second win this season and his 21st career PGA Tour triumph. This remarkable achievement places him as the third-youngest golfer to reach 21 wins, following in the footsteps of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.
Securing the St. Jude Championship win also elevated Scheffler to the top of the FedEx Cup standings. Matt Fitzpatrick follows in second place, with Cameron Young in third, trailing by 1,447 and 1,690 points respectively. With this success, Scheffler seems to have regained his winning form after numerous close finishes. He will compete next at the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri.
