The traditionalist Catholic Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) faces a serious confrontation with the Vatican. The group plans to ordain bishops without papal approval. The SSPX intends to continue with consecrations on July 1. The Vatican warned this act would be schismatic and cause automatic excommunication under Church law.
Why the Dispute Matters
Typically, the pope appoints or approves Catholic bishops. Ordaining bishops without this approval is a severe violation of Church authority. It can result in automatic excommunication. Tensions between the SSPX and the Vatican have existed for decades. The SSPX was established in 1970, in opposition to reforms from the Second Vatican Council. The relationship with Rome worsened significantly in 1988. This occurred when SSPX founder Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre consecrated bishops without papal approval.
SSPX Signals Its Intentions
SSPX Superior General Father Davide Pagliarani aimed to ease tensions. He urged members to act with prudence, charity, love, and humility and to avoid hostility toward Church authorities. Pagliarani stated the consecrations are for the Church’s good. He stressed that the group’s intentions are not confrontational despite the dispute escalating. Pagliarani called for sincere discussions with the Vatican, warning against bitterness or contempt toward Church hierarchy even if facing sanctions.
“If we must deploy all our efforts to defend the consecrations—and the society already has a whole ‘arsenal’ at its disposal for this purpose,” Pagliarani wrote. “And if a holy anger is more necessary than ever in the face of the terrible deviations that are shaking the church, we must nevertheless show neither contempt nor irritation in our explanations to those whom we are speaking to, and especially towards the hierarchy of the Catholic Church!”
Despite potential excommunication, Pagliarani emphasized they do not seek such a sanction, which he termed “objectively unjust.” Meanwhile, the SSPX is ready to defend its position. The group argues the consecrations are crucial to preserving its ministry and ensuring leadership continuity. They cite a “grave necessity” within the Church.
Vatican’s Rejection of SSPX’s Argument
The Vatican rejects SSPX’s argument. Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, head of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, stated the ordinations lack a papal mandate. This would formally break Communion with the Church. The Vatican’s statement relayed the Holy Father’s prayers. He seeks the Holy Spirit to enlighten SSPX leadership to reconsider their decision.
What Happens Next
The July 1 consecrations will likely strain relations between Rome and the SSPX. This could signal one of the most significant periods of turmoil between the two in recent decades.
