NPR Sunday Puzzle presents an engaging on-air challenge where listeners are invited to manipulate letters in made-up two-word phrases to form familiar two-word expressions. In each challenge, both words are five letters long, and the task is to rearrange the letters of one word. The challenge is discovering which word contains the letters to rearrange.
Current Challenge
Here are the made-up phrases for this week’s puzzle:
- BAKER PEDAL
- BLANK SERVE
- LEGAL FIBER
- MAID’S TOUCH
- REGAL PRINT
- HUMAN BINGE
- PEACH TRICK
- DREAM GUARD
- DUTCH TATER

- SHORE SENSE
Try to decipher which word needs rearranging to create a known phrase.
Last Week’s Challenge
Last week’s puzzle involved identifying a famous actor from the past whose name is composed of 7 and 7 letters. By removing three consecutive letters from his last name, the remaining letters spell a well-known lead character from a long-running film series.
Answer: Charlie Chaplin leads to the character Charlie Chan.
Congratulations to Thomas Hirschman from Durham, North Carolina for solving the challenge!
This Week’s Challenge
This week’s puzzle, credited to Jim Francis of Kirkland, Washington, involves identifying a famous female singer (8,4). The challenge is to note that the first syllable of her first name, the backward second syllable of her first name, and her last name forward, are all verbs associated with human desire.
If you believe you’ve solved this puzzle, submit your answer by Thursday, May 28, at 3 p.m. ET to NPR. Make sure to include a contact number for a chance to participate in the on-air game.
