New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. made a fielding error that turned into a critique on Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles. During a routine play, he mishandled an easy grounder and then shifted blame onto the second-base umpire.
The play unfolded in the second inning at Camden Yards, with runners on first and second. Pitcher Carlos Rodon managed to get Christian Franklin to hit a potential double-play ball to Chisholm at second base. Instead of completing the play, Chisholm failed to catch the ball, leading to loaded bases.
Quickly, Chisholm pointed at second-base umpire Ryan Additon, but the replay showed that Additon had not interfered and was in the right position. Despite the miscue, Rodon struck out Carlos Narvaez and Jackson Holliday consecutively, keeping the Yankees safe from the consequences of Chisholm’s mistake. The Yankees later secured a 3-1 victory.
This error is part of a challenging season for Chisholm, who carries a .216 average into the game and recently faced benching over the weekend. He acknowledged his struggles earlier, saying, “It sucked. I’ve sucked all season. The numbers speak for themselves.”
Yankees teammate Anthony Rizzo had previously criticized Chisholm’s “immaturity” after another incident leading to an ejection during a series against the Red Sox.
Ultimately, Chisholm was fortunate that Rodon managed to recover the situation, preventing any runs from being added to the scoreboard as a result of the error.
