The body of a woman has been located after an extensive eight-day search for Australian teenager Lily Hooper. She was reported missing on August 12.
New South Wales Police announced that the body was found during efforts to locate a missing bushwalker in the Southern Highlands. Although formal identification remains pending, officers suspect it is that of the 18-year-old.
The revelation followed an earlier statement by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns to the state parliament. He had mistakenly declared that Hooper was found alive, only to later retract his statement.
Local media reports suggest that Hooper’s family was initially informed of her supposed safety.
Mal Lanyon, the New South Wales police commissioner, expressed his sincere apologies to reporters for the error. “That miscommunication, I apologize for any additional trauma that may have caused Lily’s family, but certainly for the embarrassment and confusion that caused,” he stated.
An investigation will address the inter-agency communication errors. Hooper had left her home in Sydney to go hiking in a nearby national park on August 12. She was reported missing later that night after failing to return.
The Hooper family released a statement earlier in the week, expressing their devastation over Lily’s disappearance. They requested privacy and understanding while dealing with this difficult situation.
This is an ongoing story. More updates are expected.
