Actor Sebastian Stan addressed criticisms of the ‘conservative’ themes in his latest film, Fjord, during an appearance on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. The movie features a Romanian Norwegian Christian couple, portrayed by Stan and Renate Reinsve, who relocate to a Norwegian village. They face suspicions of child abuse, influenced by what they perceive as a progressive society. This leads them into a battle to regain custody of their children.
Host Michael Kosta noted that the film’s storyline might be perceived as conservative, given its focus on a religious family challenging a progressive European setting. Stan concurred but argued that labeling it as such shouldn’t downplay the issues the movie tackles.
“Some people might characterize the themes of this movie as fairly conservative,” Kosta remarked. “Are people overthinking it?” Stan responded, acknowledging the conservative interpretation but emphasized the importance of understanding the family’s struggles and objectives to raise their children as they see fit.
Stan, who did not grow up in a religious environment, encouraged viewers to view the family’s perspective before making judgments. He suggested that curiosity rather than immediate criticism could lead to deeper understanding, especially when a family strives to remain together.
During a USA Today interview, Stan rejected claims that the film endorses a “right-wing ideology,” emphasizing the complexity of the narrative. He explained that the story of an immigrant family enduring a challenging environment shouldn’t be dismissed as mere propaganda. He argued that such a perspective ignores the nuances of the immigrant experience.
Stan criticized the prevalent finger-pointing and judgmental attitudes online, warning that they lead to damaging misconceptions.
The film draws inspiration from a real 2015 case where Norwegian authorities separated five children from their parents over abuse allegations linked to the family’s religious beliefs. The family reunited after a lengthy legal battle.
Although best known for his Marvel franchise roles, Stan also portrayed a younger Donald Trump in the film The Apprentice, despite disagreeing with the former president’s actions. He believes in the value of depicting polarizing figures as part of societal discourse.
Despite playing volatile characters, Stan faces irony in media criticism, as noted by NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck. Houck remarked on Stan’s contrasting roles, highlighting the media’s inconsistent reception.
