Governor Race in Nevada Intensifies
As Election Day draws near, the race for Nevada governor between incumbent Joe Lombardo and state Attorney General Aaron Ford is becoming more competitive. Lombardo has expressed criticism of Ford’s clemency decisions, bringing the issue to the forefront of the campaign.
Aaron Ford’s Clemency Decisions Examined
Aaron Ford, serving as Nevada’s Attorney General, has supported clemency for several individuals convicted of violent crimes. This includes a case where a group executed a teenager after kidnapping him, the “thrill killing” of a Pizza Hut employee, and the cinder block murder of another victim.
Ford is facing backlash for advocating clemency for a convicted killer who murdered a pregnant woman while out on bail for armed robbery. Reviews of state pardon hearings during Ford’s tenure show his support for reduced sentences, pardons, or earlier parole for other violent offenders. However, not every request received approval.
Ford challenges Lombardo for the governorship in what is shaping up as a highly contested election. Unlike in most states, Nevada’s governor does not have the authority to grant pardons alone. The decision rests with the Board of Pardons Commissioners, consisting of the governor, attorney general, and state Supreme Court justices.
The Context of Clemency Votes
Since becoming attorney general, Ford has advocated for clemency in 30 murder cases. In some instances, he and Lombardo voted similarly, yet they diverged on votes for mercy for certain brutal offenders.
Michael Cu, a notorious convict, kidnapped and executed a teen to steal car rims. Ford supported making Cu eligible for parole, whereas Lombardo disapproved.
Cu’s eligibility for parole requires additional review by the state parole board, despite receiving a commuted sentence.
Ford’s Campaign and Criticisms
Ford’s campaign highlights his record as a top law enforcement official. His website lists achievements like combating corporate wrongdoing, tackling drug trafficking, and addressing child exploitation. Republicans, however, may use his clemency decisions to question his commitment to public safety.
In pardon hearings, Ford vouched for those seeking parole. In one case, he expressed strong approval for parole eligibility for a man involved in a fatal armed robbery at 15. He encouraged another individual, who killed someone during an armed robbery, to uphold the state’s trust in granting parole.
Ford’s approach to clemency may shape voter sentiment as the campaign progresses.
Joint Clemency Decisions
Though Ford and Lombardo occasionally voted together, such as in the exoneration of a man wrongly convicted of a murder-for-hire, the cases where they disagreed draw significant public attention.
The governor’s race will likely hinge, in part, on public perception of these decisions and their implications for safety and justice in Nevada.
